Manual: Transcoding
Musicopy supports automatic transcoding of audio files to reduce file size and fit more songs when space is limited. The desktop app converts files on demand. Musicopy also supports transferring original files without converting.
Musicopy defaults to Opus 128kb/s, a modern audio codec with efficient compression and high quality even at lower bitrates, which is transparent/perceptually-lossless for most listeners.
Some apps don't support certain formats, so transcoding can also help with compatibility. MP3 is the most widely supported format, but creates larger files than Opus. Prefer Opus for higher quality and efficient storage if it's supported by your device or app.
Supported formats
- Opus 128kb/s: Best quality and efficient storage. ~300 songs per GB, default.
- Opus 64kb/s: Good quality and very efficient storage. ~600 songs per GB.
- MP3 V0: For compatibility and best quality. ~150 songs per GB.
- MP3 V5: For compatibility, good quality, and efficient storage. ~300 songs per GB.
- Original: No conversion when transferring.
